“Breadcrumbs” is a way-finding set for the fantastic adventurer; a project developed for the Dutch province of Drenthe.
Drenthe’s landscape is fairly unbroken and sometimes repetitive, this monotony could discourage tourists from exploring the nevertheless beautiful landscape and miss out on its secret hotspots. The goal was to inspire the tourists and give them the possibility of finding Drenthe’s undisclosed treasures: locations hidden in the stretched out nature and not included in touristic maps.
Inspired by fictional and traditional navigation tools, Baraldi developed a way-finding system that based on the placements of wooden pins in the landscape (to mark the turning points) and in the brass compass (to track directions) lets people abstractedly record their journey and always find their way back home.
Breadcrumbs aims to evoke that sense of wander and adventure of an uncharted exploration by substituting comfortable tools such as maps or electronic devices with the thrill of an unknown journey and destination.
